Job Description

Job purpose: 

The Assistant Store Manager assists the Store Manager with implementing initiatives, processes, and procedures to to support the Sweet Potato strategic initiatives. This involves focusing on employee growth and supervision, external customers, and stakeholders, and facilities management, while meeting objectives for KPIs.

 

Leadership & Training

  • Participate in the hiring of team members. 
  • Participate in on-the-job training for new and existing team members, ensuring that all staff receive orientations, safety training, diversity training, and job specific training. 
  • Participate in the development of on-the-job training modules and tools. 
  • Assist in the management and development of personnel within the business - providing ongoing feedback, participating in coaching, corrective actions and evaluations. 
  • Maintain a commitment to drive diversity, equity, and inclusion in the business.
  • Lead the team to meet customer service, sales, and other company objectives. 

 

Operations

  • Maintain store standards for prompt, friendly, helpful customer service.
  • Assist with compliance of all applicable laws: business licenses, permits, food safety, health regulations, organic standards, fire code, labour laws, etc.
  • Ensure appropriate staff coverage to meet demands of customer flow.
  • Keep the store well stocked with appealing and abundant sets, displays and fresh products.
  • Assisting with ensuring that store equipment is maintained in good working order.
  • Work regular weekly floor manager shifts. 
  • Comply with all policy and legal responsibilities within the role.
  • Establish relationships with all customers: internal, external customers, and external stakeholders.

 

Facilities Management

  • Maintain the store and grounds are maintained in clean, orderly condition, meeting public health standards and community curb appeal.
  • Maintain records related to fire-safety testing.
  • Maintain key control list and security system. 
  • Maintain security of customers, staff, building and inventory.
  • Oversee repair and maintenance projects.
  • Coordinate major department cleaning projects with department managers.
  • Steward relationships with service providers - waste, pest control, janitorial, and other service providers.

 

Organizational Management & Other Responsibilities

  • Facilitate bi-weekly Departmental meetings with the retail management team. 
  • Assist with facilitation of store meetings.
  • Assist in achieving objectives for all Key Performance Indicators (sales, waste, shrink, labour, turnover, inventory turns, and margin).
  • Make recommendations to the Store Manager regarding changes in policies and procedures.
  • Contribute to other projects in relation to the business
  • Perform other tasks assigned by the Store Manager.

 

Proficiencies: 

  • Understanding of financial statements
  • Google Suite of tools (email, sheets, drive, docs, calendar, etc)
  • Detail-oriented; strong initiative and follow-through; ability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously; ability to set priorities; solid judgment 

 

Education/Experience: 

  • 3+ years supervision experience
  • 3+ years retail management experience

 

Working Conditions:

  • Active 85%, Desk-based 15%, lifting up to 20kg
  • Indoor retail environment
  • Ability to travel when required
  • Ability to work the hours required of a retail environment (min of 3 pm and 1 weekend day, weekly)
