• Product and Manufacturing Compliance in the NHP Sector

Representatives from Health Canada (Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate and Health Products Compliance Directorate) have been invited to provide an educational session on product manufacturing compliance in the NHP sector. The session will include information on strategies and tools to use to avoid common compliance issues seen during NHP good manufacturing practice (GMP) evaluations. The recent 2018/2019 GMP Compliance Monitoring Project and the 2019/2020 Quality Audit will be referenced and examples of what has been found when visiting NHP manufacturing facilities as well as findings from the audit will be discussed. The session will focus on best practices and will be an opportunity to promote the importance of GMP compliance throughout the sector. Members will also be able to ask questions and gather information on compliance-related initiatives.  

• Health Product Standards in Canada – Their Role in Domestic & International Regulations and How You Can Help Develop Them

Attend this session, presented by Anneke Olvera from the Standards Council of Canada (SCC), to learn how standardization is used in government regulation, how Canadian industry can help shape standards and define market access in Canada and around the world. This session will also provide an update on how standardization may impact the natural health and organic sector and will provide information on the creation of new standards for emerging sectors, such as the cannabis sector. 

Anneke Olvera leads the Innovation team at the SCC. SCC is a federal Crown corporation with the mandate to promote voluntary standardization in Canada, where standardization is not expressly provided for by law.

Background: China’s healthcare industry has experienced rapid growth over the last decade. It generated CAD $600 billion in 2017, up by 12.2% from the previous year. The health and nutraceutical sub-sectors were the leading sub-sectors for imports.  In 2018, import volume from other countries totaled USD $3.01 billion, up by 37.7%. Canadian health products have a good reputation in China and there is an increasing number of companies planning to target the Chinese market.

With legalization of cannabis in Canada, many companies struggle with how CBD fits. Learn how CBD is regulated today, the challenges with the current framework, and how this may evolve into the future. 

   

Lewis Retik is a partner in Gowling WLG's Ottawa office. Lewis’ practice focuses on commercialization of regulated consumer products, including foods, NHPs, cosmetics, and cannabis.  Lewis leads the Advertising and Product Regulatory group, Food and Beverage group, and co-leads the Cannabis group at Gowling WLG. 

Lewis regularly advises industry participants on the burgeoning regulatory space surrounding the growing, marketing, and sale of cannabis in Canada. His team also represents clients subject to regulatory enforcements and product recalls.

In addressing client issues, Lewis regularly interacts with senior officials of government within such departments and agencies as Health Canada, the Canadian Food Inspection Agency, the Competition Bureau, and Environment Canada. Our Plastics Dilemma: Challenges and Possible Solutions

Single-use plastics — or SUPs — are a very hot topic for Canadians. It is the number one issue the food industry is dealing with right now. Plastics are everywhere in food. They include most food and product packaging, plastic bags, straws, coffee stirrers and beverage bottles. The Agrifood Analytics Lab at Dalhousie University just released an exploratory study looking at societal attitudes in Canada toward single-use plastics: The single-use plastics dilemma: Perceptions and possible solutions. The aim of the study was to better understand the perspectives of Canadian consumers on SUPs in the food industry, and explore possible solutions. Sylvain Charlebois will present results and update us on what’s been happening in the industry and is likely to happen over the next few years. 

   

Dr. Sylvain Charlebois is a Professor in food distribution and policy in the Faculties of Management and Agriculture at Dalhousie University in Halifax. He is also the Senior Director of the Agri-food Analytics Lab, also located at Dalhousie University. He is as well the former Dean of the Faculty of Management at Dalhousie University.

Known as “The Food Professor”, his current research interest lies in the broad area of food distribution, security and safety. He is one of the world's most cited scholars in food supply chain management, food value chains and traceability.

He has authored five books on global food systems, his most recent one published in 2017 by Wiley-Blackwell entitled “Food Safety, Risk Intelligence and Benchmarking”. He has also published over 500 peer-reviewed journal articles in several academic publications. Furthermore, his research has been featured in several newspapers and media groups, including The Economist, the New York Times, the Boston Globe, the Wall Street Journal, Washington Post, BBC, NBC, ABC, Fox News, Foreign Affairs, the Globe & Mail, the National Post and the Toronto Star.
