The Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) conducted a national study and found that about 60 per cent of Canadians said they are stressed at work. “This stress is unfortunately negatively affecting their health and other areas of their lives,” CHFA nutritionist Michelle Book said. According to holistic nutritionist Michelle Book, “there is a lot of research showing an association between a healthy diet, rich in fruits, vegetables and fish, and a reduced risk of depression. The exact reason for this is unknown, but the foods we eat clearly impact our internal chemistry. We are what we eat.” “When it comes to a foods-based approach, there is not a lot of research linking specific foods to increased rates of depression,” adds Book, of the Canadian Health Food Association at chfa.ca. “However, having a diet filled with heavily processed foods and refined sugars isn’t going to do our health, or our mood, any favours.”
