We’ve all had a bad hair day. Frizzy, flyaway hairs and faded locks can put a damper on our appearance. There is no shortage of products to help with colouring, cleaning, and conditioning. However, conventional products often come with potentially harmful chemicals. Fortunately, there are some easy ways to make some simple switches to improve the vibrancy of our hair while keeping the natural flow flowing.
Shampoos and conditioners are common culprits when it comes to potential hazards. These products often contain heavy foaming agents, including sodium lauryl sulfates, parabens, phthalates and fragrances. Many of these ingredients found commonly in hair hygiene products have been linked to hormone disruption. The low-dose and frequent exposure we have to these allows them to be absorbed and accumulate over time. Worse, some don’t even need to be listed on the label. For example, in tests conducted by the Environmental Working Group and the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics, an average of 14 chemicals were found in common “fragrances.”
Visit your local CHFA Member health food store for a wide variety of effective shampoos and conditioners that rely on natural ingredients for cleansing. You’ll also discover new ingredients, such as marula oil and coconut water, finding their way into hair care products, which provide a naturally nourishing boost for gloriously healthy hair.
Hair dyes are more popular now than ever, but it may not come as a surprise that some dyes can contain chemicals that can damage hair. In fact, some dark permanent hair dyes contain coal tar in the ingredients. Many also include potential carcinogens, including aminophenol, diaminobenzene and phenylenediamine, not to mention bleach and ammonia. Ammonia and peroxide, commonly found in conventional hair colour products, can damage the protective cuticle of the hair and result in moisture loss, which can lead to dry, damaged hair.
Natural hair dyes, on the other hand, rely on herbal ingredients and other natural plant-based pigments that can condition and nourish your hair while adding a vibrant, long-lasting colour. Many products offer a wide range of colours for a bold new look.
Whether you’re looking for everyday hair hygiene or the occasional re-tint, there are a variety of natural alternatives that are not only effective but will leave your hair with a healthy lift and nourishing sheen.
