CHFA Congratulates MP Terence Young on the Passage of Vanessa's Law

On November 7, 2014

TORONTO, Nov. 6th, 2014 /CNW/ - The Canadian Health Food Association (CHFA) would like to congratulateTerence Young, Member of Parliament for Oakville, on the passage of his bill, Protecting Canadians from Unsafe Drugs Act, also known as Vanessa's Law into official federal legislation.

This well-considered bill is designed to make amendments to the Food and Drugs Act, a piece of legislation that has not seen substantive updates in over 50 years, in order to strengthen the laws for Canada's pharmaceutical industry and better protect Canadian consumers.

CHFA supports this bill as it differentiates Natural Health Products (NHPs) from pharmaceuticals, which is consistent with their low-risk profile. NHPs are just that – natural, and CHFA commends the government for recognizing that fact. CHFA looks to ensure that there are appropriate regulations and legislation in place for NHPs and have them treated separately from drugs. As such, CHFA collaborates with the government to ensure that Canadians continue to have access to safe, effective and high quality NHPs.

The Canadian Health Food Association is Canada's largest trade association dedicated to natural health and organic products. This year CHFA is also celebrating its 50th  anniversary. Its members include manufacturers, retailers, wholesalers, distributors, and importers of natural and organic products. They represent an industry that contributes billions of dollars to the Canadian economy every year, employs thousands of people across the country, and serves the health needs of the more than 70 per cent of Canadians who consume their products every day.
