Emkao Foods: Advancing DEI in the Chocolate Industry

Equity is shaping the future of the chocolate industry.

Across the global supply chain, the way we source, partner, and grow matters. Centering diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, from paying premium prices directly to smallholder farmers in West Africa to fostering inclusive workplaces in North America, creates stronger businesses and more resilient communities. DEI isn’t a stand-alone initiative; it’s a business strategy that drives innovation, builds trust, and strengthens long-term impact. When equity is embedded at every level, it doesn’t just support the industry, it transforms it.

At Emkao Foods, diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging (DEI) are not just values—they are the foundation of our mission and business model. As a woman- and minority-owned chocolate company, we are committed to creating a more just and inclusive food industry, both within our organization and throughout our supply chain.

Centering DEI at Every Level

Our DEI journey starts at the source. We work directly with smallholder farmers in Cameroon, Nigeria, and Ghana—many of whom are women and members of underrepresented communities. By cutting out the middleman and paying premium prices, we ensure fair compensation, economic empowerment, and a stronger voice for those who have historically been marginalized in the global cocoa trade.

Within our Canadian and U.S. operations, we strive to foster an inclusive workplace where every team member feels valued and supported. Our hiring practices prioritize equity and representation, including mentorship opportunities and flexible work arrangements for newcomers and underrepresented groups. We believe that diverse perspectives drive innovation and resilience—qualities that are essential in today’s industry.

Community Engagement & Education

Emkao Foods is actively involved in community initiatives that raise awareness about DEI and social impact. From public speaking at events like the Black Equity Social to participating in entrepreneurship panels at UBC, we use our platform to advocate for greater representation in food and business. We also support local events, sponsor educational workshops, and collaborate with partners who share our values.

Celebrating Diversity Year-Round

We honor celebratory dates such as Black History Month, International Women’s Day, and Indigenous Peoples Day by sharing stories of our farmers, team members, and partners who inspire change. These moments are opportunities to spotlight achievements, address challenges, and encourage ongoing dialogue about inclusion.
