Retailer Guide to Trudeau's GST Tax Break: What You Need to Know

Last week, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau announced a temporary GST and HST tax break on specific items to help Canadians with affordability during the holiday season.

This tax relief proposal has not yet been legislated or enacted, however we encourage our impacted members to determine which of their products are subject to this proposal. The tax relief will run from December 14, 2024, to February 15, 2025, and applies to a variety of goods.  

Businesses are expected to remove the GST/HST on qualifying goods at checkout as of December 14, 2024. 

Provincial tax (HST) should also be removed for the following participating provinces:

Four Ways Retailers Can Prepare:  

  1. Retailers must ensure their systems reflect the GST/HST exemption on qualifying items.  
  1. Train employees on the policy changes, emphasizing the list of exempt items. 
  1. Use in-store signage and online messaging to inform shoppers about the tax savings and qualifying items. 
  1. Clarify that the exemption applies only during the specified period.
