These awards are presented at each of our trade shows, CHFA East, CHFA West, and CHFA Quebec. Nominations are submitted and votes are cast by CHFA Members in good standing.

CHFA Willie Pelzer Memorial Hall of Fame
Janet Jacks has been passionate about the food-health connection for over 40 years, beginning when her husband was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes and she set out to find natural ways to heal the body and prevent disease.
Her passion for this connection and the positive results she experienced after changing her diet made Janet want to share this with others. Out of this passion, Goodness Me! Natural Food Market and Lifewatchers, her ten-week healthy living program, was born.
Based on this success and knowledge, Janet wrote Discover the Power of Food: The 10 Week Plan to Transform Your Life. This book consolidates Janet's 40 years of experience, research and the latest nutritional information into one life-changing book, complete with practical tips and recipes.
Janet hosts her own radio show “Just for the health of it,” and continues to lead courses and workshops in the industry about the food-health connection.
CHFA Organics Achievement Award
Gail Mountain helped to lead Indigo Natural Products Management for over 20 years. Before that she was part of Horizon Distribution which is a founding player in the natural and organic industry. Gail and the Indigo Team developed sophisticated approaches to marketing organics across Canada & worked with client partners of all sizes and all sectors of the industry.
Gail’s dedication to, and unflagging belief in, the natural products industry has led to the continued growth of not only Indigo which, today, manages many of the premium brands in the industry, but also the growth of the organic industry. The company also continues to be recognized as a national leader in organic trade development.
Gail is known for her wonderful nature, warm-heartedness and powerful golf swing! She is a true leader and avid supporter of organics.
CHFA John Holtmann Leadership Award
Matthew James has 20 years of experience in the natural health products industry. Beginning as a sales representative, he then moved into marketing and was involved in everything from brand management, new product development, to public relations, and Vice President of Sales and Marketing at Purity Life Health Products, Matthew is currently President/CEO and Co-Owner of Purity Life.
Matthew has extensive experience in all aspects of the supply chain of the natural products industry through his current role as President and CEO of Purity Life where he is responsible for all aspects of the supply chain, including sourcing, manufacturing, marketing, sales and distribution, as well as all the supporting functions that make all this possible (HR, IT, QC/QA, Accounting and Operations).
With his extensive knowledge of the natural products industry, conducted through the Health Food, Mass and Practitioner channels, Matthew has a balanced perspective of all the various issues in each channel. In addition, he has the unique vantage point of seeing the issues from both a brand marketing perspective and a distribution perspective, given Purity’s dual role in the industry.
Matthew’s depth of experience and hands-on knowledge of all aspects of the natural health products business make him a great advocate for other manufacturers, distributors, vendors and retailers in Canada. As a user and advocate of natural health products, Matthew can easily relate to all CHFA members. With his extensive management experience in every aspect of running a business and his solutions-based approach Matthew is able to tackle any issue and work toward a win-win solution.

CHFA Brock Elliott Memorial Award for Excellence in Retailing
Founded in 1977 Community Natural Foods is celebrating their 40th Anniversary of operations in 2017. Community Natural Foods operate three full format stores in Calgary, Alberta which generate over $50 million in annual revenue and service an estimated audience of over 150,000 customers annually.
Within the industry, Community Natural Foods is recognized for their superior staff knowledge and customer service, and believe that by creating exceptional customer experiences that they will always be a home for their company within the marketplace. Additionally, their investment in technical infrastructure has allowed them to created efficiencies which are rarely seen within natural food markets in Canada.
In 2016 Community welcomed the entire supplier community to Calgary for a one-day summit which opened a dialogue allowing for an increased depth of retailer/supplier collaboration, introduced a brand new B2B vendor portal, revamped their staff product training program, doubled their promotional activities, and launched many other new initiatives. They also grew the demand for their in store seminar series with consistently more than 75 participants in their bi-weekly store staff led How2 lecture series and with more than 120 participants in their monthly lectures presented by industry experts.
