Natural Health Products

Natural health products (NHPs) are a class of health products used to restore or maintain good health. These include vitamin and mineral supplements, herbal remedies, traditional and homeopathic medicines, probiotics and enzymes.

In Canada, NHPs are regulated by the Natural and Non-prescription Health Products Directorate (NNHPD) under their own regulations, the Natural Health Products Regulations, which came into effect in 2004. These regulations take into account the unique properties and low-risk nature of these products, ensuring that Canadians have ready access to NHPs that are safe, effective and of high quality, while respecting freedom of choice, and philosophical and cultural diversity.

A few examples of natural health products include:

  • calcium or iron (minerals);
  • Echinacea or Ginseng (herbal remedies);
  • glutamine or leucine (amino acids);
  • omega-3 (essential fatty acid);
  • vitamin C or vitamin B complex (vitamins); and
  • probiotics and Prebiotics.

Some categories of natural health products are:

  • antioxidants;
  • enzymes;
  • greens products;
  • homeopathic products;
  • certain personal care products with natural medicinal ingredients (acne products, antiperspirants, some toothpaste, some sunscreens, some anti-dandruff products)
  • pre- and post-workout products; and
  • weight loss/management products.
